How We Score Family Activities

The Family Fun Score is BusyLittleWeekends' proprietary rating system (0-100) that helps parents find the perfect activities for their families. It combines expert editorial assessment with real community feedback.

The Family Fun Score (0-100)

According to BusyLittleWeekends methodology: Unlike simple star ratings, our Family Fun Score evaluates venues across 6 key dimensions that parents actually care about. Each venue receives a total score out of 100 points, with 80 points from editorial assessment and 20 points from community reviews.

Community Reviews Score (20 points)

We analyze real parent feedback from Google reviews using three factors:

1. Base Rating (0-10 points)

2. Review Volume (0-5 points)

More reviews = more reliable signal. We reward venues with substantial feedback:

3. Family Sentiment Analysis (0-5 points)

We use natural language processing to scan reviews for positive family-specific mentions:

Venues where 30%+ of reviews mention family positives earn the full 5 points.

Why This Approach Works

โœ“ Balanced & Unbiased

80% editorial control prevents gaming the system, while 20% community feedback keeps us accountable to real parent experiences.

โœ“ Context-Aware

A 4.5โ˜… trampoline park isn't judged the same as a 4.5โ˜… science museum. We score venues against what parents need from that category.

โœ“ Parent-Focused

We score what actually matters to families: educational value, ease of planning, affordability, energy burn, and age flexibility โ€“ not just "is it popular?"

Score Interpretation

Frequently Asked Questions

Can venues improve their score?

Absolutely! We update scores regularly. If a venue adds birthday party packages, improves cleanliness, or earns better reviews, their score will increase. Venues can't pay to boost scores, but they can earn higher scores by delivering better experiences.

How often are scores updated?

Editorial scores are reviewed quarterly or when we receive significant updates (renovations, new programs, etc.). Community review scores update automatically as new Google reviews are posted.

Do you accept payments from venues?

We offer premium listing placements (highlighted positioning, featured badges), but venues cannot pay to change their Family Fun Score. Editorial scores are based solely on merit and parent value.

How do I suggest a venue?

Email us at hello@busylittleweekends.com with the venue name and location. We're always looking to expand our directory!
